It Had To Be You! (Parts 1 and 2)

Part 1

Fred and Monica had been best friends since they were three. They grew up in Liverpool and basically, they were almost neighbors. They went to the same school and college. Fred was a tall and intelligent boy with dusky skin and messy hair, and Monica had an average height with an appealing voice and medium and subtle hair. Since their college days, they had a lot of fun together hanging out and having sleepovers. They had many common interests like long walks in the evening, the Harry Potter series, watching movies, reading books, and telling each other about them. Fred had a knack for writing letters; every once in a while, he wrote them for Monica. They had a handful of friends in college and never needed anyone because they had each other. Fred always wanted to be one of the cool guys in college, and after many failed attempts, he gave up. After all, one good friend is all he needed, and he had just the perfect person, Monica.

It was a Tuesday afternoon, and it was their math class. The teacher began randomly asking questions to anyone. It was Harry’s turn, but he didn’t know the answer. Harry was one of the popular guys in college. Coincidentally, Fred was sitting next to him and he immediately whispered the answer to Harry. Harry answered and got it right. He asked Fred if he would like to sit with him, Bill, and Percy, who were the most popular guys in college. Without hesitating, Fred agreed and started hanging out with them. Fred was having the time of his life as many students started to know him. His Instagram followers shot up, and he was having a good social life. During this time, he completely forgot about Monica. They noticed each other in the corridors, but other than that, they didn’t meet each other.

One day, Monica called Fred during recess to talk about something important. At the same time, Harry bumped in and invited Fred to accompany the popular gang to the canteen. Fred couldn’t say no and started to leave Monica by herself because he thought she would understand and realize how much the invite meant to him. But he was wrong because Monica’s face turned red with anger and she lashed out at him, "You know what? Do what you want. How dare I try to interfere with your "popular life"! He could hear the sarcasm dripping from her voice. She ran away with a face full of tears.

Several days passed and they still weren’t talking to each other. On a rainy day, Fred was sitting idly and scrolling through his Instagram, checking his number of followers. He came across the photos of him and Monica. He gazed at the photo with a smile on his face, realizing that he had not seen her for a while. He decided to surprise her by paying a visit to her and even got their favorite cookies as a little treat.

But when he reached her home, it had a lock on it. He tried calling her but to his despair, her phone was unreachable...

Part 2

But when he reached her home, it was locked. He tried calling her, but to his disappointment, her phone was unreachable. He asked some of their neighbors about her whereabouts, but they didn’t have an idea about it. He even tried texting her on every social media platform he could but was unsuccessful because her accounts were deactivated long ago. He was dejected that he couldn’t meet her. Several days passed, and Fred was still sad because he couldn’t see her and have all the fun they used to have together. He cut all ties with Harry and his mates, because of whom he lost his best and a real friend. He even deactivated all of his social media accounts. Every day, he sat lonely at the lunch table during recess, thinking about Monica and where she must have gone.

He was missing her so much that he used to look at their photos daily and read some of their previous chats and letters. He cried thinking about her and thought that he should have been more careful and paid more attention to her. As time elapsed, her absence made him realize many things. One of the many things was that he loved her. We realize the worth of people in their absence, and the same happened with him. He couldn’t get her out of his head and thought of her for quite literally the whole day. He had this euphoric feeling when he thought of her or looked at their photos. The person he loved was sitting right under his nose, but he didn’t realize it soon enough. He missed her so badly, but there was no other option as there was no way he could contact her.

A few weeks later, he graduated from college and got into a fine university where he made new friends and was having the time of his life. He partied with them on weekends but studied hard at the same time too. He was everyone’s favorite there and was quite a different person now. He was approached by many girls there, but he rejected them all. Why? Because he still had that affection just for his special woman on earth, Monica. He never felt the same bond and energy with any of his friends that he had with Monica.

In due course, he completed his education and finally got the job he always wanted, and he was well paid too. He was living quite a life. Once, he went for a little trip to the Bournemouth beach. The waves were crashing on the shore, and the blazing sun was casting its blaring rays on the rocks by the seaside. Many tourists were wandering around in the sand, playing volleyball, building sand castles, and playing in the seawater. Fred was chilling on the beach. He sat on the grainy sand, watching the sun set into the sea and listening to the sweet sound of waves. He was in a total state of relaxation when suddenly he was hit by an airball. A small girl approached him to take the ball. He smiled at her and gave the ball back. He watched the girl return to her mom, and the mom’s face looked familiar. It was Monica.
